The paper discusses the results of a survey of copper corrosion in country NSW and identifies strategies for minimisation of copper corrosion. The main outcomes of this preliminary survey included: 35 % of the respondents reported some form of copper corrosion; corrosion indices indicated that approximately 60 % of the respondents had potentially corrosive waters; and 57 % of the respondents with relatively low alkalinity water reported corrosion problems. Suggested management strategies included: raising pH, alkalinity and hardness, particularly by dosing lime and carbon dioxide; maintenance of a free chlorine residual throughout the distribution system; advising consumers to flush; and appropriate plumbing system design and maintenance.
